Gorgeous girl and gorgeous smile- but what you can’t see is the strength and determination in every photo. This spunky fun senior has been thru multiple foot surgeries, and was on crutches for this entire session although her Doctor gave the all-clear for travel and portraits! Don’t worry, mom and I made sure she took frequent breaks and didn’t push this passionate kid. Safety first always, no photo is worth risking her health.

Resolved not to be slowed down, she flew to Arizona from Montana to get photos like ones she fondly remembered from being a kid and playing in the backyard of her grandparents to sunsets with Sonoran Cacti silhouettes. So of course the best place for cacti and dreamy desert views in Phoenix is the Botanical Gardens. No sunsets of this rare overcast afternoon, but Abe’s smile beams away the clouds, and cloudy days are lovely for soft shadows and vibrant color.

This northern plains basketball and volleyball star has beaten the odds before- and will again! On the road to healing and enjoying her senior year!

Jadyn Class of 21 | Phoenix Senior Pictures by Anjeanette Photography

We had a breezy beautiful Phoenix afternoon exploring downtown to celebrate Jadyn’s upcoming graduation- and respectfully include the art, artists, memorials, and impact of civil rights felt around the world and represented on Roosevelt Row.

Jadyn was killing it @parkwoodphotographystudios last week for the second location of her Phoenix Senior Pictures session! Since we were shooting part if her session on Roos Row it made@perfect sense to rent space at the gorgeous Parkwood Studios instead of driving up 45 mins to my space- and Parkwood had everything we needed from plenty or room, props, changing space and great mirror lighting, to cool clean cyclorama walls and a beautiful courtyard. I believe you can rent lighting from them as well, but I brought my own⤵️

I LOVE natural light- but I LOVE setting up my @godoxlighting flashes just as much!

Fabulous epic senior session photoshoot with Carissa!! What a way to cap off a sorta, ho-hum pandemic era senior year. We packed a LOT in the afternoon from laundry mats, to bookstores, to ferris wheels and the always awesome Mill Ave in Tempe.

Carissa lights up on camera and made every shot effortless, great modeling! Such a fun-filled day, and incredible memories for this musician, thinker, and artistic young lady. She reminded me of Belle from Beauty and The Beast in Bookmans bookstore. Congrats on your upcoming graduation Carissa!!

Ashley has such an energetic and happy spirit! Her smiles and laughs made this cloudy Saturday senior session shine bright!

The OC grad to be braved the wind like a pro, maybe partly to her Eagle Pride ROTC grit, and posed all over downtown #Phoenix to #PapagoPark in style. Everyones crazy for a sharp-dressed senior! She is still choosing the right after high school experience, but looking at a bunch of colleges and possibly even the photographic arts! Congratulations on your senior year Ash!!! Go get that world!

Science tells us our memories are changing. Changing because of our access to information, computer use, emotional maturity and the world around us. Understanding of what a memory even is has grown. Changing for the better in many ways. In other ways we understand more now that, well, really, what we remember isn’t even true based on a multitude of factors like perception, recall, and our of so human tendency to focus on the dreadful. Modern cognitive theory of a sensory memory, a short-term memory and a long-term memory has always been studied by humans, but really took off in the 60’s and 70’s as medical equipment was able to measure and compile more information to study. When combined with the long history of memory study…we gained a better understanding of how our memory works. Basically, it’s lying to us. Yet we are in control of those half or missed truths about what really happened during a moment that we lived.

Why do I bring this up in the middle of a senior session blog? Because by all reasonable standards this year has sucked. We know it, everyone is saying it’s the worst, all the news confirms that everything is terrible and it is just going to get worse and worse with an excited gleam in their eyes. Those who should be our most trusted elder members of society complain, and yell, and have told us they have looked back and compared to all memory this is the worst year ever in the history of forever. They are not wrong that it’s been terrible. Heartbreakingly we have lost so many souls we can't get back. Another reason photographs of those we love are so very important! The election turmoil has hurt us all. We cannot deny the hurt our society inflicts on so many of its members from people of color, to women, to those differently-abled. We have to do better. We all have pandemic fatigue we cannot let win.

We need to be safe and careful- we need to look to faith and science and stop ignoring the dangers of climate, the treatment of others less privileged, and political concerns. We also need to breathe, stop hoarding toilet paper, and live a little too. Neither can we forget the improvements this new era has brought us, it’s better by far than medieval times, so we know we are capable of great things. No pressure,eh?

We can’t always 100% trust our memory-which isn’t such a bad thing after all! We have a generation of kids here- Gen Z- that is the most well-informed, compassionate, strong, and thoughtful generation. Just because maybe not everyone appreciates that or understands their TikToks and IG posts and writes them off as just kids (exactly as THEIR parents and grandparents did before them- nudge-nudge) doesn’t mean it isn’t true. These kids are poised to be the next greatest generation. Support them. Celebrate them, help them. and get their moments of joy in a tough world truly memorized in a photo whenever you can. They are also the most documented and photographed generation so they can handle it hahahahah.

Find moments of joy and photograph the shit out of them, then hold onto THOSE good memories instead!

The brain in general, and memory, in particular, has a distinct negativity bias. It pays more attention to, and highlights, unpleasant experiences.

The brain typically detects negative information faster than positive information, and the hippocampus specifically flags negative events to make doubly sure that such events are stored in memory.

Negative experiences leave an indelible trace in the memory, even when efforts are made to “unlearn” them.

This is probably an evolutionary adaptation, given that it is better to err on the side of caution and ignore a few pleasant experiences than to overlook a negative, and possibly dangerous, event. - THE STUDY OF HUMAN MEMORY https://human-memory.net/

If we can’t trust our memory then what can we trust? Trust photos! Trust how you feel right now. Enjoy the moments, smile, and be present. Capture the good times and hold them tight. I always ask parents to get in some photos during sessions- parents GET IN THE DAMN PICTURES. Your kiddos deserve a photo of you together. Nobody who really matters gives a crap if you gained some COIVD pounds or don’t like your bangs. They NEED those photos of you for the hearts mamas.

One of the major lessons of memory research has been that human memory is fallible, imprecise, and subject to interference. Thus, although observers can remember thousands of images, it is widely assumed that these memories lack detail. Contrary to this assumption, long-term memory is capable of storing a massive number of objects with details from a (photographic) image. -

Botanical Gardens with my favorite girl | Anjeanette Photography Seniors | Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens

Its already a busy start to the 2018-19 school year! Before the schedule gets especially hectic I visited the Desert Botanical Gardens again with my favorite model for a mid week daughter- mama date and quick session!

Everyone in Phoenix should visit these amazing garden. Seriously y'all should fly in to visit them from whereever you are, they are that fantastic. Its simply one of my favorite places to shoot and visit in the state!

Hey class of 2016 & 2017-if your browsing for the perfect poses and environments on Pinterest for your senior pictures do not forget to check out my Anjeanette Illustration Senior Photography board! Each of the seniors on my board are my real clients. They just look like professional models! Each of them are amazing intelligent humans from real life, with the ambition and dreams to prove it. We worked together planning the perfect indoor and or outdoor environments that speak about who each individual is, their hopes for the future, goals and paths they were embarking on as they completed high school and entered more independent life.

Now, we have all heard the condescending statement “when you get in the real world” as if the life you are actually living right now is somehow less important. Who you are now heavily shapes your first few years after high school, and while so many changes are to come documenting and remember your experiences in school is important. Now COUNTS. This is real life-like I always say Memories are for a lifetime and not just a news feed. Of course you will want to share you images-so will I! So I will be sharing with publishers, and across my Instagram and social media. I just want to stress though that it is just important to preserve the images physical via prints or albums that will carry on long after technology has changed-ain’t nobody passing down usb drives and cds in 20 years. Don’t believe me? How many times have you used a floppy disc or Jaz drives? My senior photos are saved on a less than 1 gigabyte Jaz drive. Hilarious, they must be half the size of a postage stamp??? And we didn’t have internet in those day. Carved in stone and everything. I am so thankful for the real photographic prints my parents had made!

Your senior pictures are portraits that should capture who you are right now in real life, treasure to keep and look back on for your families as well as yourself as you grow even more into the amazing people you already are. And heck isn’t it just fun to dress up however YOU want and play? No matchy matchy with your big or little siblings this time. It's all about you- and your kinda big deal :) This is a session full of fun and expression and you are calling the shots- literally! Expressing yourself and being the sole focus of a session is empowering! Anjeanette Illustration Seniors plan their multiple outfits and together we discuss incorporating your distinct personality into your session. All the images will be lovely, and plenty of favorites for parents. Additionally, there will be dramatic and stunning landscapes and portraits that showcase all that you are and hope to be. Classic background studio portraiture is available as well- with rich detail and beautifully lighting patterns. Modern and minimal- yet so much more than just the same exact cookie cutter wall every other fellow student from school is leaning against. Finding the right senior photographer is a very individual choice, because you want that person to understand your vision for your session- what will become the portraits hanging at your banquets and graduation parties, and in the hallways of your childhood homes! And I may not be the perfect photographer for you. Honesty! Of course I want to be chosen to bring your session dreams to life, but if I am ok with not being the perfect fit for everyone as I want everyone to get what they want. I am a wee bit weird in that way maybe, which is definitely something about me you should know if we do work together. Remember to check out the portfolios of senior photographers and see the images they consistently make for other...you should see their work and say "YES! This is what I want!" with excitement! That is such a key to a fantastic successful senior session- and our area is so blessed with a variety of amazing photographers with unique styles, so any senior in the Hendersonville, Tn and Nashville, Tn area has the perfect opportunity to find exactly what they want.

So, what do you want to ‘say’ about yourself? What are your favorite activities? Many schools happily allow sessions on campus with uniforms if there are music, drama, art, or athletic activities you enjoy. Libraries are fantastic spots for unique photos. Bring your furry best friend! Bring your books, instruments, and ideas! Is there a special area in town you like to hang out at? Do you daydream of vibrant lush fields fashion, dense mysterious woods, heroic sports posters,  or gothic romanticisim? Do you have an epic artistic scene in mind, or a grungy urban album cover when you imagine your photos? Do not hold back- let’s make some magic.
