Congrats to the Class of 2021 | Sandra Day O'Connor Eagle Pride Marching Band | Senior Banners!

Some of the seniors from the Eagle Pride band asked me to make their Senior Night Banners! Since my daughter graduated and all the craziness of the world befell us, I have missed seeing these young people and watching their program grow!! It was a super-secret night planned by their parents where their class is celebrated. I’m positive they had no idea why they came to my home studio for portraits right ;) Some parents make gorgeous, elaborate signs, so I am so honored that a group of parents asked me out for these 48”x36” vinyl poster for their students! I know how much this meant to me as a former EP parent to have one for my girl her last year in the program <3

I am just so glad they get to have their senior night after all the disappointments and events lost out on!! I pray for better healthier days for all of us and the very best for the class of 2021 as they tackle their new adventures!!!

Class of 2020 Instagram stories | The details changed- your accomplishments haven't!!!

Cap and Gown sessions are some of my favorites. This year they are so bittersweet. This year...whew.
I am sure you are sick of hearing that you are resiliant, that you will overcome, that you will be stronger for it.
That is all true- but honestly? This year sucked. And this was supposed to be THE year right? You worked hard for 12 years and certainly deserved better. You should be celebrated and cheered. Cheering from the internet just doesn’t feel the same. I def feel a little lame typing encouragement from the couch instead of jumping up and down in a school auditorium or stadium- but I really really DO believe in you.
This class, this generation that won’t meekly sit by and ignore injustice. This generation that gives a you-know-what about each other and the earth and everything. So yeah maybe I sound like a rambling mom cheerleader but damn, boy- you rock! All of you!!! I do think you will prevail above and beyond complacent survival. Yeah yeah surviving is important. I don’t want just surviving for any of you. I want you to thrive. You will be stronger because of everything that has been and to bring better things out of these ashes.

Sierra's Wrestling & Cap N' Gown mini session! | Anjeanette Photography

Wrestling champion Sierra knows all about the grind of a tough season- the determination and grit to go through the fire and make the podium as a champion. this year, it wasn’t just the wrestling mat she conquered, her 2020 senior year proved to be a challenge she persevered with the most of the world. Only senior year did not end with the celebration or ceremony they deserved. Regardless of canceled proms, graduations, and important events to recognize a momentous time is a person's life Sierra and her classmates have shown their resilience to face uncertainty and pressure to persevere. Maria Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Senior Anthem, Peoria, North Phoenix Arizona

I am so thankful Maria and I finally got to get together for a safe in the sun social distancing senior session before she heads off to Rice University! The Class of 2020 has had a wild ride navigating a whole new world of pandemics and epidemics. Marias is ready to debate and lead the Z Generation to victory!

Normally of course we would already be way past senior season! I really wanted to extend it and make some extra spots after all these young folks have had to deal with this unique and challenging year from fears for health and safety, to raising their voices for equality. After everything else they didn’t have to miss out on senior portraits. The best is yet to come have no doubt seniors. Right now you are shaping the future... I cannot wait to see how you change the world for the better. But I will wait day by day bc obvs thats how time works hahaha!

Maria had her sunrise session last week - when the desert morning air is a little cooler and the sun is brighter! She brought music, books, laughter, and all the smiles! Desert sunrise morning sessions are fantastic for light and airy looks and glittery sands! Congratulations Maria on all of your amazing accomplishments!!! A very bright future awaits!

Brooke SDOHS Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Senior Portraits Anthem, Peoria, North Phoenix Arizona

One of a kind, real-life superhero Brooke not only nonchalantly rocks a 55lb+ tenor drum set during marching band season- she also loves all the fishes and will be majoring in Marine Biology in the fall. Brooke had been planning her senior pictures for close to a year- she knew since her junior year she wanted to do them at the Scottsdale Odysea Aquarium and carefully got her ideas ready. Brooke will be a part of the Mariane Biology program at the University of Hawaii- her acceptance was a win for UofH because this young lady is a hard-working and bright kid- she finished in the top 10% of a graduating class of over 600 and was the recipient of many awards & cords from her school in academics and band. We started talking about plus planning her session in the summer of '19. We had no idea that a few months after the new year began all the things that would cancel priceless and irreplaceable events in her senior year of school. Much less postpone her portraits. Thankfully businesses like the Aquarium were able to quickly reopen with new safety procedures to protect the animals, staff, and visitors when the state reopened after the Cobid19 pandemic shut down. The class of 2020 missed a lot. So much h that cannot ever be replaced. While the loss of special once in a lifetime pom and circumstance obviously pales in comparison to the losses of life and upheavals in our country from the disease and distress of a society unequal in it's care, liberty, rights, and compassion for people of color- it was still a loss that should not be taken lightly. Thankfully, senior portraits are one event seniors do not have to miss out on. While not every school will walk, and those that do have abbreviated telecast or social distancing ceremonies- a sense of celebration and closer is very possible in senior pictures. The Class of 2020 will have an amazing story to tell of perseverance and grit- and hopefully the triumph of taking care of each other with compassion and justice. Congratulations Brooke on your graduation, many honors, and acceptance into the college of your dreams! I can’t wait to see where your adventures take the new Jacques Cousteau!

We enjoyed the last of the cool breezes in Arizona for Roxy's senior portrait session. And what a gorgeous day with a gorgeous senior! This Chapparel Class of 2020 grad was ready to celebrate the end of her grade school career...and the end of an 'interesting' senior year to say the least! We chased the golden sunshine across the Phoenix skyline from Heritage Square to Steele Indian School Park accumulating in an amazing sunset over the Steele fountain. She rocked her session with five killer outfits and amazing smiles! Congratulations Roxy, on your accomplishments graduating from high school and on your next adventures!

Class of 2020 senior skip day champions- event cancellations do not mean you have to miss everything about senior year! Find the joy and zoom your friends- virtual games and hugs- get through these uncertain times together! When things are back to 'normal' and it is safe, we can reschedule and plan those special events as much as possible. If prom and graduation are permanently on hold- we can always have an amazing portrait session in your formals and caps and gowns when it is safe for everyone. This is a momentous time in history- it will be talked about for generations. Feeling broken-hearted that so much has changed- from sudden goodbyes to realizing the last time you were on campus already happened- that is normal. It's ok to feel grief, to mourn that loss. Know that like these hard times, that sadness and grief will not last. Be gentle with yourselves, know you are loved. Do what you can from online learning to personal enrichment, to naps or tik toks and Animal Crossing to take care of yourselves. Find ways to have peace and serenity. Journal these moments in writing, video, or art. You still have the power to make positive memories. With the stay at home order lifted in Arizona, hopefully, we reduced the curve to allow for better care for all and are all better equipped to fight this pandemic and win....the news can be scary and overwhelming, but I am constantly uplifted by stories of people helping each other, lifting each other up, and the essential workers from health care and first responders to grocery employees who are saving lives! In all the shuffle to prepare and social distance, the Class of 2020 experienced a tremendous loss. Health and safety are paramount- but the memories of a senior year lost have also been traumatic. Senior year memories are something many folks carry with them their whole lifetime. These seniors won’t have all of them. They shouldn’t have to lose all of their senior year experiences - I am so thankful that with a long lens outside I am able to provide one important of the big year- senior pictures 🧡 Stay safe 2020- you matter no matter what has happened. Your achievements have NOT changed just because the circumstances around them have!

Jason Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Senior Anthem, Peoria, North Phoenix Arizona

It’s gallery delivery day! As Jason’s mom said I was absolutely teasing them with sneak peeks on Instagram of Jason’s senior picture session- I am so excited about how great Jason did and some of the images captured for him! We had a warm but gorgeous Arizona day last week when we finally got o to have Jason's rescheduled senior portrait session. Starting at the ASU Grant street studios and ending at Papago, I got to know this dynamic senior and his family amidst the reopening of our city and state. Jason impressed me with natural smiles and ease in 100+ temps- never let em see you sweat! While Jason did a fantastic job for his portrait session we were all the most excited to get to the track for some sport action shots of Jason biking! Jason's ride looks like a mountain bike with killer suspension, giant tires, and the ability to dirt jump and basically drop off of ...MOUNTAINS! Crazy being right next to a bike falling that far and fast when it whooshes past. The course he uses has trails with tight curves, rough and smooth transitions in terrain, and multiple hard-packed dirt ramps that he propels over to fly through the sky- all overlooking the skyline of Phoenix. Luckily for me, we got a fantastic sunset at the end of his session so I was able to get a variety of sky colours as he shot off of hills and ledges! Congratulations Jason, on your accomplishments graduating from high school and on finding something you love like biking- doing what you love is one of the greatest gifts. It's obvious how much time, hard work training, and effort you put into making soaring through the air look effortless. Keep that passion for life wherever you go on this adventure of life!

Taylor Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Senior Anthem, Peoria, North Phoenix Arizona

It turns out that I actually saw Taylor about a year before we ever met! We were chatting about her love of theatre and performance and dreams of acting in college. Taylor is an accomplished actress who has performed in local youth theatre groups as well as at Sandra Day O’Connor where my own kids attend school. The theatre productions at that high school are not like the plays and musicals we put on when I was in hs- they are extremely professional and have amazing production values. That got us talking about favorite musicals, and I mentioned a few recent ones I had been to in NY and locally, including Sister Act at The Arizona Broadway Theatre that friends from church treated us to- it turns out I had already watched Taylor perform as a part of that ensemble cast!!

Taylors brought a vintage vibe to her session, with her favorite records from Billie Joel to Carole King to Fleetwood Mac with her retro sunglasses- she was so effortlessly cool. For the perfect backdrop, she had her sights set on Mill ave with its local indie bookstores and classic flashback style movie theatre - plus Sparky's ice cream parlour.

We soaked up att the sights from tiny garden nooks to parking garages with stunning views of ASU and Gammage before heading over to the Tempe Arts Center for a peachy rose sunset by the water. One fun item Taylor and her mom planned were bubbles- she loves them, and what a way to blow your cares away after a disappointment than colorful bubbles. Bubbles don't fix problems obviously, but they sure speak to the resilience of Taylor's spirit in far less than ideal circumstances. She hasn't totally made her mind up about which college she will be pursuing next year- and with so many universities postponing events it has been hard to get all of the information and auditions in to make a choice. This class of graduating seniors has had so many setbacks and pivots disrupting their lives- yet they are all seemingly taking it in stride. They have adapted to the new normals with amazing recovery rates from grief and are comfortable with their emotions and taking on hard challenges head-on with a sense of humor- anticipate remarkable things from them in the years to come. No pressure ;)

Taylor you are a star, cannot wait to see what you tackle next year and beyond!

Back when we had this session I had no idea it would be my last for....months? It was the middle of what should have been a busy senior season with exciting grads to be getting photos to celebrate their 12 years of primary and high school. Photos for invitations and announcements. Photos to decorate grad party tables. So much has changed...so many of my seniors are waiting and on hold until everything is safe. Pictures will be here when it is over. Parties with dancing in the very streets. Even if proms and ceremonies are officially canceled don’t lose hope that things can be rescheduled- or that you will find new and more amazing ways to celebrate! I will see you all when it’s over. stay safe and prepare for the next act!

They are tools to help us frame and identify what we may be feeling. But they are not stops on some linear timeline in grief. Not everyone goes through all of them or in a prescribed order. Our hope is that with these stages comes the knowledge of grief ‘s terrain, making us better equipped to cope with life and loss. At times, people in grief will often report more stages. Just remember your grief is as unique as you are.” ”

Not gonna lie, the past two days have been very tough. I am beyond broken-hearted for the Class of 2020- my daughter and niece are on my mind constantly as are all the grads. Simply put: this sucks. And I know I know I know we need to look for the positives, I know how important self-care is and I am praying for all of you to take care. Eventually, the clouds will pass. I hope things can be rescheduled. If not I am looking forward to seeing communities rise up to host amazing block party graduations or impromptu proms. I will be here when we get the all-clear that it is safe to resume for cap and gown photos and prom dress sessions...but right now? It just sucks. Mourning is a natural part of grief. At this point, we have heard all of this already obvs. I was hearing it in what was apparently my denial phase, however, so today I am letting it really sink in. Can't go over it, can't go under it, have to go through it. this year has turned into a bear hunt. We will find peace and normal again someday. But it ok to feel that sad, disappointed feeling. Some days it feels like I am going through all five stages of grief all the same time. We lost a lot this year, and logically I know that better things are to come, that this will fuel your future, eventually the storm clouds pass. It's more than ok to grieve, it's actually important to heal and move on in a positive way! I am giving myself a grief timeline. Like I have X number of days to fully feel the hard feelings and then it is time to move on - that's what works for me, it keeps me from forever wallowing in grief and losing sight of the future. I don't intend to become victimized by any negative experience. That may not work for you- how we experience and process grief doesn't work the same for everyone. 

After my sad days are up...it will be time to find NEW ways to celebrate the seniors I know and love personally. And to celebrate the seniors I have never even met! What ideas do you have for that? What would a new way to celebrate look like for you?

I didn’t get to finish the season…so many seniors still to meet! After the danger passes we have plans to reschedule, and I am happy to figure out ways to celebrate you before your next adventures start- or if you want to come back on a fall adventure break (from college, military service, jobs, or other adventures) an finally get that cap n gown photo :)

Let’s try to make the best of it. Photos can be rescheduled, your health is most important now! Stay home, learn new things and rest. The future will be here before you know it!

Max Liberty HS Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Phoenix

Met up with Max at DC Ranch earlier last month and he did a fantastic job posing, what a fantastic smile! Who knew then that his spring break would turn into senior year finished at home? Liberty grad to be Max is a roll with it guy however, his music and drums will get him through. I loved his Eddie Redmayne fashion model vibes! Great job Max!

While the COVID19 pandemic surrounds us, I am still working on sessions from weeks back before it all hit. So thankful for clients and seniors who have been able to postponed sessions for safety, and in accordance with the Stay-At-Home orders of March 30th. I can’t wait to meet up with them later this year! Also really blessed so many folks had sessions planned earlier before everything happened. Keep your chins up Class of 2020- roadblocks have never stopped you before. Use this time to plan . You are the most optimistic and driven digital natives ever born. You CARE about what matters, you are unique, authentic, creative entrepreneurs. You are a generation poised for success, and can strategically navigate challenges- even global pandemics- to your advantage. Got get it!

Bubbly and vivacious Chloe's senior session was right before the Pandemic- literally just weeks before the "stay at home" orders were issued for Arizona and I closed up shop as a precaution for everyone's safety! Don't worry, we were still 'legal' and I used a 200mm lens to social distance :)

The tough news couldn’t hold back Chloe’s smiles though. She is a determined young woman, ready to take on the world. Plans change, and things beyond our control come up throughout life. Chloe is ready to pivot, to adapt, to be strong.

Class of 2020 senior skip day champions- event cancellations do not mean you have to miss everything about senior year! Find the joy and zoom your friends- virtual games and hugs- get through these uncertain times together! When things are back to 'normal' and it is safe, we can reschedule and plan those special events as much as possible. If prom and graduation are permanently on hold- we can always have an amazing portrait session in your formals and caps and gowns when it is safe for everyone. This is a momentous time in history- it will be talked about for generations. Feeling broken-hearted that so much has changed- from sudden goodbyes to realizing the last time you were on campus already happened- that is normal. It's ok to feel grief, to mourn that loss. Know that like these hard times, that sadness and grief will not last. Be gentle with yourselves, know you are loved. Do what you can from online learning to personal enrichment, to naps or tik toks and Animal Crossing to take care of yourselves. Find ways to have peace and serenity. Journal these moments in writing, video, or art. You still have the power to make positive memories.

Gen Z is are poised to change the world. Not since the greatest generation that lived through WWII and the great depression has a group of young people who care been on target for success. Later when things are more settle we can celebrate.

Senior year for the Class of 2020 has taken a completely unexpected turn, devastating many hopes and dreams as proms, graduations and in some cases senior pictures. At the very least it has postponed them indefinitely and this year's seniors are heartbroken. I am hyper-aware of this as a senior photographer, even more so as a parent of a high school senior. Thankfully we were able to plan ahead and get some of her portraits taken at the end of summer last year right before the school year started. I just may have gone a little overboard with senior pictures! But can you really go overboard? Nah! My girl is an outside of the box dreamer, with music and art in her heart always- we wanted to plan a fun trip that also expressed her personality and charm! For my daughter’s road trip session, we started from Phoenix to Palm Springs, California. The next day we hit Newport Beach and Balboa Pier, then onto a day in Los Angeles where we visited The Last Bookstore - has to be seen by any book lover- and the MOCA. Another day on the beach at El Matador and La Piedra for gorgeous sea spray and sand. We popped by the Rose Bowl to catch a DCI drum corps show one day, then we were off to one of my bucket list photo session spots: the Nelson Nevada Ghost Town and Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours. We had many more adventures planned, from cap and gown portraits to springtime outings in her future college town that have been postponed due to the need to socially distance to protect everyone which has taken precedence. To the class of 2020- you ARE resilient! While not every moment or event can be rescheduled, no one can cancel what you have achieved and your dreams will not be on hold forever. When life has returned to normal, or a new kind of 'normal', what a celebration your schools, communities, and families will have for you. Spend this break wisely, completing school work, meditating away frustration, looking up bizarre scholarships and essay writing. Working when you can, taking care of yourselves. Before spring break 2020, before the quarantine, my family had a chance to take a weekend getaway to San Diego. Soon it would be my daughters last spring break with us before college. Restaurants were still open, the dog beach was busy, everyone was welcome at Salvation Mountain! What a difference a month makes. we had no idea that soon spring break would be spent at home on the couch then stretched into a month off, wondering how to complete exams, worried there would even be a prom or graduation, not sure if college orientations and summer plans to get ready were going to be possible? Have hope friends. stay safe, keep healthy. Sunny days will come again.

Harrison & Kylie Shadow Mountain Class of 2020 | Anjeanette Photography Senior Anthem, Peoria, North Phoenix Arizona

What a year 2020 has been- and it is only March! WOW, when we were taking these we had no idea what was to come in the next few weeks! The worries were far away and spring break had just begun... So thankful I was able to go ahead with this long ago scheduled duo senior pictures session before Covid-19 social distancing quarantine began! So much uncertainty and worry. Despite all the challenges we are facing now and may face in the near future, memories of our most valuable moments are important- they are worth holding onto.

Kylie and Harrison are high school sweethearts who wanted their senior pictures taken together. We walked around the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens on a golden light filled afternoon, capturing portraits of each of them separately and together in the cactus blooms of spring. We had fun laughing and posing, and smiling in the bright sunshine. While some things may be uncertain in the immediate now, in the fall these two are headed to ASU and the Navy with bright futures ahead! Their bond and these moments will not be forgotten. Both families are good friends, so joint sessions together was an obvious choice for them, making sure to ask me for photos of them altogether.

Class of 2020 -Hang in there. No words can replace prom or the end of your school year, but know that there will be light at the end of this terrible tunnel we are in. The future is yours and you will ROCK whatever comes next.

It is no secret that one of my favorite places to take senior pictures in Phoenix is the Desert Botanical Gardens- the gardens are so good to clients and photographers! Even popular spots become unique, even nooks and crannies that are my personal favorites are made new - the personality of each senior shines through! Teagan was no exception- her bubbly light and big gorgeous smile outshone the sun on this fantastic Arizona spring day! Teagan came ready with a plan, her mood board, and four awesome outfits, as well as her own camera so that we could capture senior year memories to express her artistic journey to graduation. Love that I get to be creative for a living - which is why I had so much fun meeting Teagan for her portrait session -she is a photographer and artist too!

As I write this blog, it was sadly just announced that due to precaution due to the coronavirus, WGI had to make the difficult decision not to hold World Championships this year. The Dayton Ohio competition is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year, many of the performers are also members of Drum Corp International. It is understandable that Winter Guard International wants to make sure to protect the students and dancers by keeping them safe and following CDC guidelines, its still heartbreaking for everyone who has worked so hard and raised so much money to be on teams, especially high school seniors and age out members in their final year of competition. I have read the WGI is considering extending the age by a year - so that next year is still open for those ending their Winterguard season so abruptly. Have faith, I know the organization is heartbroken too as the plan years in advance to have the convention center and host areas planned and organized, they prioritized the safety of everyone's over a lucrative season. Watching everyone perform is an amazing experience, from seeing new young guard kids tossing their first flag to the precision and mastery of sabers tossed 15 feet overhead while executing a perfect Grand Jete! My daughter and I were remarking on how GOOD everyone was this season, it was like everyone had leveled up significant;y. I am heartbroken for you all on such a short season- and excited for how you will overcome this disappointment to thrive and shine in the years to come in winterguard or beyond.

Simply amazing session with fashion-forward beauty Bella downtown PHX! This soon to be ASU Prep Class of 2020 graduate is poised, polished, and ready to set off for NYC in drama studies- the absolute BEST place theatre in the world!!. Great to meet with her for fun mural art-packed senior pictures on a gorgeous Arizona spring day. After a walking trip around the best of the Roosevelt Row arts district and my favorite coffee spot BeCoffee, we took a quick trip to check out the architecture outside the Orpheum. We finished in the heart of Phoenix with cityscapes and neon courtesy of Lucky Strike bowling and Stand Up Live clubs off Jefferson Street. Congratulations Bella- excited to see all you will accomplish!
