Ashley has such an energetic and happy spirit! Her smiles and laughs made this cloudy Saturday senior session shine bright!

The OC grad to be braved the wind like a pro, maybe partly to her Eagle Pride ROTC grit, and posed all over downtown #Phoenix to #PapagoPark in style. Everyones crazy for a sharp-dressed senior! She is still choosing the right after high school experience, but looking at a bunch of colleges and possibly even the photographic arts! Congratulations on your senior year Ash!!! Go get that world!

Science tells us our memories are changing. Changing because of our access to information, computer use, emotional maturity and the world around us. Understanding of what a memory even is has grown. Changing for the better in many ways. In other ways we understand more now that, well, really, what we remember isn’t even true based on a multitude of factors like perception, recall, and our of so human tendency to focus on the dreadful. Modern cognitive theory of a sensory memory, a short-term memory and a long-term memory has always been studied by humans, but really took off in the 60’s and 70’s as medical equipment was able to measure and compile more information to study. When combined with the long history of memory study…we gained a better understanding of how our memory works. Basically, it’s lying to us. Yet we are in control of those half or missed truths about what really happened during a moment that we lived.

Why do I bring this up in the middle of a senior session blog? Because by all reasonable standards this year has sucked. We know it, everyone is saying it’s the worst, all the news confirms that everything is terrible and it is just going to get worse and worse with an excited gleam in their eyes. Those who should be our most trusted elder members of society complain, and yell, and have told us they have looked back and compared to all memory this is the worst year ever in the history of forever. They are not wrong that it’s been terrible. Heartbreakingly we have lost so many souls we can't get back. Another reason photographs of those we love are so very important! The election turmoil has hurt us all. We cannot deny the hurt our society inflicts on so many of its members from people of color, to women, to those differently-abled. We have to do better. We all have pandemic fatigue we cannot let win.

We need to be safe and careful- we need to look to faith and science and stop ignoring the dangers of climate, the treatment of others less privileged, and political concerns. We also need to breathe, stop hoarding toilet paper, and live a little too. Neither can we forget the improvements this new era has brought us, it’s better by far than medieval times, so we know we are capable of great things. No pressure,eh?

We can’t always 100% trust our memory-which isn’t such a bad thing after all! We have a generation of kids here- Gen Z- that is the most well-informed, compassionate, strong, and thoughtful generation. Just because maybe not everyone appreciates that or understands their TikToks and IG posts and writes them off as just kids (exactly as THEIR parents and grandparents did before them- nudge-nudge) doesn’t mean it isn’t true. These kids are poised to be the next greatest generation. Support them. Celebrate them, help them. and get their moments of joy in a tough world truly memorized in a photo whenever you can. They are also the most documented and photographed generation so they can handle it hahahahah.

Find moments of joy and photograph the shit out of them, then hold onto THOSE good memories instead!

The brain in general, and memory, in particular, has a distinct negativity bias. It pays more attention to, and highlights, unpleasant experiences.

The brain typically detects negative information faster than positive information, and the hippocampus specifically flags negative events to make doubly sure that such events are stored in memory.

Negative experiences leave an indelible trace in the memory, even when efforts are made to “unlearn” them.

This is probably an evolutionary adaptation, given that it is better to err on the side of caution and ignore a few pleasant experiences than to overlook a negative, and possibly dangerous, event. - THE STUDY OF HUMAN MEMORY https://human-memory.net/

If we can’t trust our memory then what can we trust? Trust photos! Trust how you feel right now. Enjoy the moments, smile, and be present. Capture the good times and hold them tight. I always ask parents to get in some photos during sessions- parents GET IN THE DAMN PICTURES. Your kiddos deserve a photo of you together. Nobody who really matters gives a crap if you gained some COIVD pounds or don’t like your bangs. They NEED those photos of you for the hearts mamas.

One of the major lessons of memory research has been that human memory is fallible, imprecise, and subject to interference. Thus, although observers can remember thousands of images, it is widely assumed that these memories lack detail. Contrary to this assumption, long-term memory is capable of storing a massive number of objects with details from a (photographic) image. -

Why you want BOTH | High school grad portrait photography | Senior photographer Anjeanette Photography Arizona

I was planning a session with a senior and her mom recently when a somewhat touchy subject came up. The portrait company your "school 'forces' you to use". Not my words, but I think that's how it feels to a lot of seniors. "We have to use that company" and to get your formal, traditional tux & drape or cap & gown image in the yearbook you may have to! The portrait company is not a grim and malicious entity, however. I offer a solution- do both! Get the formal and yearbook image secured- then get the styled session you WANT.

...but is it IG worthy?

What happens is the company approaches the school, and both the school and the company profit from your purchases. Yep, its a good old fashion school spirit fundraiser so go ahead and participate! They publish the yearbooks so they get to say what goes in it. It's a great deal for simple economical images for everyone. That's really ok, its a business like any other, and as a photographer who worked for such a company for years I get it and have no ill will towards the 'competition'. Because I think you should get both, and I do not think it IS competition. I think all of our collective images are valuable memories for you. To me though, your modern senior shoot out os so much more than JUST a business...

So, maybe just those few formal photos are enough for some seniors. But if you have been pouring over magazines, eagerly going through your friends Instagram, and Snapchatting with filters maybe you want more.

Heck if you are on my website reading THIS, you def want MORE, right?

Prom mini sessions with friends, combined sessions, editorial Vanity Fair and Vogue looks...what do you want to do with your custom senior portrait session?

So, no I am not against the school's portrait company in the least.

For one thing, the formal images are classic. Your grandmother got them, your older sister got them. Some schools have composites of high school senior portraits lining the walls from the early 1920's. That's a wow from me! It's pretty amazing to go look at those hallways which literally have entire family generations represented. These are amazing heirloom photographs everyone should have.

When you visit the school's portrait company, or sometimes when they come to you, there is an option to also get a few extra poses in casual wear. These can be fun and enough for those who do not enjoy taking photos. For those who want more, the school's photographers just do not have the time to spend creating a portfolio of incredible, unique, kick-ass photos.

Why not have both?

Not being salty, its just true. I DO think you should enjoy and get prints of those classic cap & gown images but beyond that they have a limited number of minutes with you on the SAME basic backdrops as everybody else. Why stop with that when you can ALSO have a fun-filled, FIRE of a session. It's like a modeling shoot that is ALL ABOUT YOU!

Well you, mom, BF, your dog & guitar- who ever and whatever you want to bring along! There are classic photos for mom and the family- and you will love them more the older you get but they are just not NOW. So do you want more?

Ultimately, they are using the same cookie cutter backdrop EVERYONE at your school is getting (SNS)

Do you want a full fashion session that is completely tailored to YOU? Multiple outfits, an array of handpicked locations, stunning fashion or urban looks, expressing your personality with more than just one prop, fluid hot posing and movement, smiles and fun plus serious slay expressions. So much more than stand here, look here, and fake smiles.

Every Anjeanette Photography session has all of that and more! 

Why have an extra photo session just for you? Because, duh.

And I DEF did not want the white background with the big 3d numbers- it wasn't even cool way back in the 90s either. That hair tho ;) The school's contracted photographer only had less than 15 mins to spend on my whole senior session :/

I fall in love with every project I am a part of- I am become emotional and professionally invested in capturing the memories of every client! Most family and senior sessions have full session galleries up and ready to view in less than 3 weeks. I always offer a 24 hour social media sneak peek to share with anyone you wish!

To look through portfolios and really consider what you want your family or senior images to look like- a photographers website or printed materials should show you what level of work to expect from them!
What you see is what you get so find the style that perfectly matches what you want!
Budget so that you do not have to hire one whose photos you do not LOVE. Why? Few couples hang the graduation cake or cap and gown above the mantle, fewer still hand those items down to children and grandchildren.

Photos memorizing your priceless moments are what you get to share and remember by as the years go by- they are treasures!

Ask yourself: Is it worth it to get a bargain on photos if one is unhappy with the photos? Does the photographer have real client testimonials on view on their website & trusted sites like Google? How many sessions will that person photograph that day- is my session a priority? Is getting "free" photos worth it if I am unhappy with them or they are poor quality- or worse they are never delivered? Are prints available on my online gallery or do I have to go to a poor quality pharmacy to print them?
