Today's spotlight shines on Matthew, a dude with wanderlust in his soul and a future at NAU etched on his horizon. Forget about stuffy studios and forced smiles; Matthew craved a backdrop as wild and free as his spirit, and what better fit than the Sonoran Mountain Desert's rugged beauty?

Golden sunlight was bleeding over saguaro silhouettes, casting long shadows across the dusty trails. Add in a cool breeze whispering through prickly pear patches and the distant call of a coyote – nature's symphony in full swing. No really, we heard them that’s not just poetic bs! It was the perfect spot for Matthew to paint his senior portraits with the desert's vibrant brushstrokes.

Matthew soaked it all in. You could practically see the gears of his mind turning, maybe dreaming of future hikes, mountain expeditions, and maybe even a touch of stargazing under NAU's open skies. He spoke of his passion for environmental science, his plans to explore the world's hidden corners, and the excitement of leaving his mark on the planet. And in those moments, the desert wasn't just a backdrop; it became a symbol of the challenges and possibilities that awaited him.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the cacti in fiery hues, we captured the essence of Matthew's journey. These weren't just senior portraits; they were a visual narrative of his transformation from high schooler to adventurer, to a young man ready to embrace the wild unknown.

As an Arizona Valley based photographer AND Sun Devil mom myself, I’ve photographed countless Arizona State University seniors on the cusp of graduation. Each one has a unique story to tell, and Madison, an accomplished scholar with a passion for literature, is no exception. Madison’s senior portrait session was a true delight. 

We took the adventure to Scottsdale, Arizona, where we explored the enchanting Butterfly Wonderland where the vibrant colors and fluttering wings created a magical backdrop to the cozy corners of The Poisoned Pen Bookstore. Madison's senior pictures session was a unique blend of nature's beauty and the magic found within the pages of a good book.

Next, we ventured to The Poisoned Pen Bookstore, a haven for bookworms like Madison. Surrounded by towering bookshelves and the comforting aroma of old books, she posed and browsed for favorites novels and childhood picture books to include in portraits. The bookstore was a vibe of a  metaphor for the vast knowledge Madison has acquired during her time at ASU, a place where each book represents a chapter of her academic journey.

College graduation is a pivotal milestone in one's life, signifying years of hard work, personal growth, and academic achievement. Grad portraits capture the essence of the ASU journey, preserving memories, and inspiring future success. These portraits not only capture individual milestones but also reflect the unique spirit and culture of ASU including landmarks and locations around campus that have become important to the students during their time at Arizona State.

Trevor graduated from ASU School of Engineering in December, with a Bachelor of Engineering degree and is currently a Production Assistant with Underdog Lighting and Grip while he pursues Engineering opportunities. We met up for Grad photos around campus at the iconic Tempe campus hitting all the Sun Devil favorites.

Senior year is a momentous time in every student's life, and one of the most cherished traditions is capturing this milestone through senior portraits. In Arizona, with our diverse landscapes and unique natural beauty, I make selecting the best time to take senior portraits easy as I have already considered weather, lighting, and different areas that express the character of our state - so that I get you the best results in stunning photographs that truly capture the essence of the senior and this desert wonderland.

Arizona is known for its arid climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters- and its a senior photographers paradise with all the variety and availability to have sessions year round. To avoid the scorching heat of the summer months, it is advisable to plan the session during the fall, winter, or spring seasons, or to have a summer session in studio or a unique indoor location. Autumn offers comfortable temperatures, golden foliage, and vibrant colors, providing a picturesque backdrop for portraits. Winter brings cooler temperatures, which can be a refreshing change, and the possibility of capturing unique shots against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains in northern Arizona. Spring brings the bloom of desert wildflowers, offering a vibrant and colorful setting for senior portraits.

A crucial element to consider is lighting and time of day. Arizona is known for its abundant sunshine, which can create harsh shadows and intense highlights during midday, which is why I avoid middle-of-the-day sessions unless they are indoors.

To achieve softer and more flattering lighting, I highly recommend scheduling the session during the "Golden Hour." The Golden Hour refers to the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is softer, warmer, and more diffused. During this time, the Phoenix desert landscape is bathed in a beautiful golden glow, creating a magical atmosphere for senior portraits. This enchanting light adds depth, warmth, and a touch of romance to the photographs, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

 

Golden Hour

Warm golden light, high contrast, stunning glow….The best light of the day for outdoor shoots! I start golden hour senior sessions two hours before sunset to maximize the wow! Awesome for highlighting the best skin, colors, and dimension in photos.

 

 Sunset photos

Just as or after Golden Hour when the sun dips behind the mountains surrounding the Phoenix Valley is prime time for striking sunsets. Never can guarantee- but when there is on Arizona has the best!

 

Blue Hour after Sunset- NIGHT SHOTS

Dramatic, bold, colorful- lights! Night shots as unique as you are a great opportunity to shine. This is at the end & included in most action sessions- if we plan it right we can have Golden Hour, Sunset, and Blue Hour night photos in one session!

 

Sunrise/Morning Sessions

Beat the heat! Cooler temps and cooler colour tones- this is the best light in my opinion for Light & Airy style photos. Sunrise sessions start 15 minutes before sunrise so no sleeping in hahah

 

Studio or Indoor Sessions- Anytime!

A studio or interior space can capture YOU and your vision without distraction or crowds. From an epic shoot at a museum or theatre (click to check out unique spots)

to a classic fashion studio (studio portfolio here) we can get all the looks- while enjoying air conditioning!

 

It is important to consider the personal preferences and style of the senior being photographed so I like to collaborate with the senior and their family to understand their preferences, interests, and aspirations can help in choosing the best time and Phoenix or other location for their senior portraits.

The ASU Stunt Devils are not your ordinary sports team. They are acrobats, aerialists, and stunt performers who specialize in gravity-defying acts that push the boundaries of what we typically consider sports. Their performances include the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps, tumbling acrobatics, and more. The energy, agility, and precision displayed in their acts are simply mesmerizing.

Sports portrait photography is all about capturing the essence of the sport, with fantastic individual portraits. With the ASU Stunt Devils, it's about capturing the essence of fearlessness, strength, and artistry. Sometimes guys are hesitant to take senior photos, not sure what they will do or ow to stand or feel awkward- but they can be the best sessions! I always tell them don’t worry I’ll tell you how to pose- and after a few minutes we get comfortable and they start killing it. It’s not weird or dumb to get portraits guys. Its just a fun as you make it- you will look awesome, and whats the harm in expressing yourself and feeling great about yourself?

Now I would never know if this guy had any hesitations about portraits because Jacob was killing it with great looks all around downtown like a model! He took to it very naturally and looks amazing because of that willingness to get into it. Rocked it, crushed it, killed it, swag, sheeesh anyway you say it Jacob did it! What an awesome session! This guy hits different and def has senior guy style!

Twins Morgan and Quiton brought extra heat to their duo senior session last week, and they def beat the sun for blazing looks and style by a long shot!!

Morgan was an amazing model, she didn’t let the heat effect HER heat- she brought it!!! Nothing stops this volleyball beauty from conquering her goals, certainly nothing are trivial as 108 degrees.

When she’s not awkwardly writing about herself in the third person, she is praying, painting, reading, and exploring the world with her husband and children and her trusty National Parks Passport.

Technically these are not sneak peeks -bc Anthony has already had his gallery a few weeks! We met up at #OldMain for a mini session the very day after he graduated from #ASU and because of the full line up I already had on IG I didn’t want him waiting too long for them while he was celebrating the week after walking.
