Gorgeous girl and gorgeous smile- but what you can’t see is the strength and determination in every photo. This spunky fun senior has been thru multiple foot surgeries, and was on crutches for this entire session although her Doctor gave the all-clear for travel and portraits! Don’t worry, mom and I made sure she took frequent breaks and didn’t push this passionate kid. Safety first always, no photo is worth risking her health.

Resolved not to be slowed down, she flew to Arizona from Montana to get photos like ones she fondly remembered from being a kid and playing in the backyard of her grandparents to sunsets with Sonoran Cacti silhouettes. So of course the best place for cacti and dreamy desert views in Phoenix is the Botanical Gardens. No sunsets of this rare overcast afternoon, but Abe’s smile beams away the clouds, and cloudy days are lovely for soft shadows and vibrant color.

This northern plains basketball and volleyball star has beaten the odds before- and will again! On the road to healing and enjoying her senior year!

I was so honored to be a part of the AzMBA team for group photography at the Division I Championships! Thank you for having me, and thank you to Mountain Pointe High for hosting the competition. Congratulations to all the bands on an amazing season! Go band!

The Arizona Marching Band Association Division I Championships crackled with electric energy, the culmination of months of tireless practice and unwavering dedication. And at the heart of it all, amidst the booming brass, thundering drums, and dazzling visuals, I had the incredible privilege of capturing each AzMBA marching bands group portraits.

From the moment I stepped onto the Mountain Pointe High campus I was swept up in the whirlwind of band spirit. The air hummed with a symphony of anticipation, uniforms crisply pressed, instruments gleaming under the sun. Faces, etched with nervous excitement, transformed into fierce determination as the first notes soared skyward. As the AzMBA team marched onto the field, a collective roar from the stands ignited the atmosphere, setting the stage for a performance etched in memory.

Today's spotlight shines on Matthew, a dude with wanderlust in his soul and a future at NAU etched on his horizon. Forget about stuffy studios and forced smiles; Matthew craved a backdrop as wild and free as his spirit, and what better fit than the Sonoran Mountain Desert's rugged beauty?

Golden sunlight was bleeding over saguaro silhouettes, casting long shadows across the dusty trails. Add in a cool breeze whispering through prickly pear patches and the distant call of a coyote – nature's symphony in full swing. No really, we heard them that’s not just poetic bs! It was the perfect spot for Matthew to paint his senior portraits with the desert's vibrant brushstrokes.

Matthew soaked it all in. You could practically see the gears of his mind turning, maybe dreaming of future hikes, mountain expeditions, and maybe even a touch of stargazing under NAU's open skies. He spoke of his passion for environmental science, his plans to explore the world's hidden corners, and the excitement of leaving his mark on the planet. And in those moments, the desert wasn't just a backdrop; it became a symbol of the challenges and possibilities that awaited him.

As an Arizona Valley based photographer AND Sun Devil mom myself, I’ve photographed countless Arizona State University seniors on the cusp of graduation. Each one has a unique story to tell, and Madison, an accomplished scholar with a passion for literature, is no exception. Madison’s senior portrait session was a true delight. 

We took the adventure to Scottsdale, Arizona, where we explored the enchanting Butterfly Wonderland where the vibrant colors and fluttering wings created a magical backdrop to the cozy corners of The Poisoned Pen Bookstore. Madison's senior pictures session was a unique blend of nature's beauty and the magic found within the pages of a good book.

Next, we ventured to The Poisoned Pen Bookstore, a haven for bookworms like Madison. Surrounded by towering bookshelves and the comforting aroma of old books, she posed and browsed for favorites novels and childhood picture books to include in portraits. The bookstore was a vibe of a  metaphor for the vast knowledge Madison has acquired during her time at ASU, a place where each book represents a chapter of her academic journey.

College graduation is a pivotal milestone in one's life, signifying years of hard work, personal growth, and academic achievement. Grad portraits capture the essence of the ASU journey, preserving memories, and inspiring future success. Trevor graduated from ASU School of Engineering in December, with a Bachelor of Engineering degree and is currently a Production Assistant with Underdog Lighting and Grip while he pursues Engineering opportunities. Senior year is a momentous time in every student's life, and one of the most cherished traditions is capturing this milestone through senior portraits. In Arizona, with our diverse landscapes and unique natural beauty, I make selecting the best time to take senior portraits easy as I have already considered weather, lighting, and different areas that express the character of our state - so that I get you the best results in stunning photographs that truly capture the essence of the senior and this desert wonderland.

Arizona is known for its arid climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters- and its a senior photographers paradise with all the variety and availability to have sessions year round. To avoid the scorching heat of the summer months, it is advisable to plan the session during the fall, winter, or spring seasons, or to have a summer session in studio or a unique indoor location. Autumn offers comfortable temperatures, golden foliage, and vibrant colors, providing a picturesque backdrop for portraits. Winter brings cooler temperatures, which can be a refreshing change, and the possibility of capturing unique shots against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains in northern Arizona. Spring brings the bloom of desert wildflowers, offering a vibrant and colorful setting for senior portraits.

A crucial element to consider is lighting and time of day. Arizona is known for its abundant sunshine, which can create harsh shadows and intense highlights during midday, which is why I avoid middle-of-the-day sessions unless they are indoors.

To achieve softer and more flattering lighting, I highly recommend scheduling the session during the "Golden Hour." The Golden Hour refers to the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is softer, warmer, and more diffused. During this time, the Phoenix desert landscape is bathed in a beautiful golden glow, creating a magical atmosphere for senior portraits. This enchanting light adds depth, warmth, and a touch of romance to the photographs, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Golden Hour

Warm golden light, high contrast, stunning glow….The best light of the day for outdoor shoots! I start golden hour senior sessions two hours before sunset to maximize the wow! Awesome for highlighting the best skin, colors, and dimension in photos.

Just as or after Golden Hour when the sun dips behind the mountains surrounding the Phoenix Valley is prime time for striking sunsets. Never can guarantee- but when there is on Arizona has the best!

Dramatic, bold, colorful- lights! Night shots as unique as you are a great opportunity to shine. This is at the end & included in most action sessions- if we plan it right we can have Golden Hour, Sunset, and Blue Hour night photos in one session!

Sunrise/Morning Sessions

Beat the heat! Cooler temps and cooler colour tones- this is the best light in my opinion for Light & Airy style photos. Sunrise sessions start 15 minutes before sunrise so no sleeping in hahah

The ASU Stunt Devils are not your ordinary sports team. They are acrobats, aerialists, and stunt performers who specialize in gravity-defying acts that push the boundaries of what we typically consider sports. Their performances include the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps, tumbling acrobatics, and more. The energy, agility, and precision displayed in their acts are simply mesmerizing.

Emily’s video is ready!!! Yay!  That means….it’s delivery day for her gallery!!! What a star- this Varsity Mountain Ridge Cheerleader’s awesome downtown Phoenix rooftop sesh was amazing. This session really shows off her spunk and smile. I like to do multiple sets from each session on Insta to show off multi aspects of each seniors personality, their different outfits, and the way the changing light hits and glows those last two hours of the day. at locations almost as amazing and gorgeous as she is. Glow up your Saturday afternoon with this kids smile! I was going to include lyrics for a song with "Colors" in the title to match Sami's vibrancy and the retro cool & spalshy backdrop of the @saguarohotels #scottsdale but all I can think of is True Colors by Cyndi Lauper or Colors by Ice-T- and while those songs are kick-ass neither really seems to fit- what's YOUR favorite color song?
